Hilo, Waiakea win BIIF Judo Team Championships
The BIIF Judo Team Championships took place on Saturday, and concluded with Waiakea High School winning the Girls bracket and Hilo High School winning the Boys bracket.
The Warriors entered the Girls bracket in the No.1 seed, defeating Kamehameha Schools – Hawaii in the semifinal round before winning over Hilo in the Championship. Konawaena High School beat KSH to win the consolation championship.
On the Boys’ side, the Vikings also entered in the No.1 seed. HHS beat No.4 seed KSH in the semifinal, then beat Waiakea to take the Championship title. Konawaena’s boys team also won the consolation championship by defeating KSH, and Keaau High School defeated Kealakehe High School to win the fifth place round.
This year’s championship was somewhat of a reversal from last year’s, when Hilo won the girls championship and Waiakea won the boys.
The BIIF Judo season will conclude with the Individual Championships, which will take place Saturday morning at Konawaena.
Winning teams and individuals will get a chance to compete at the HHSAA State Judo Championships, which begin April 29 and will be held at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.
Warriors sweep Trojans
Kamehameha Schools — Hawaii’s varsity baseball and softball teams each won road outings at Ka‘u High School in four innings, with the boys winning 21-1 and the girls winning 18-1.
At the softball game, Kahiwa Ili went three-for-four — hitting a three-run homer, scoring three runs and four RBI. Napua Ho went three-for-three with a walk to record the Warriors’ best batting average of the game, scoring three runs. Rebekah Sipinga, Elizabeth Reyes, Kaohi Christensen and Rhian Ogawa all also went three-for-four.
Malyann Lokat led Ka‘u at the plate, going two-for-two and batting in the Trojans’ only run.
In the baseball game, Dylan Hanson went three-for-three with a hit-by-pitch to lead KSH at bat — hitting a three-run homer and scoring three runs with three batted in. Dominic Christensen went four-for-five to score four runs and bat in six.
Keyan Kanahele pitched all four innings for the Warriors and struck out four batters while surrendering one earned run on four hits and a hit-by-pitch.
KSH’s baseball team will play its final regular season Division II test at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at home against Konawaena. The Wildcats and Warriors are tied in the standings, so Wednesday’s game will likely determine who enters the postseason in the No.1 seed.
Both KSH’s baseball and softball teams will host their final regular season games on Saturday against Waiakea High School, with softball beginning at 11 a.m. and baseball at 1 p.m.
Vikings dominate Wildcats
Hilo High School’s varsity softball team beat Konawaena High School 18-4 on Saturday in a non-division away match.
Hilo scored a run in the first inning while shutting out the Wildcats, then opened the floodgates with nine runs in the top second to leave KHS in the dust.
Mya-Lisa Justo led the Vikings at the plate, going two-for-three with a walk to score four runs and bat in three. Madison Waiki went two-for-five, doubling twice to bat in three runs and score two.
Konawaena was not without its own highlights, as Haikela Hiraishi hit a three-run homer — and went one-for-three with a walk to score a run and bat in three.
The Wildcats have no remaining regular season games, are 2-3 in Division II play and 3-6 overall in BIIF play. Postseason brackets have not been finalized yet — but since Konawaena stands at No.4 in DII, they will likely enter the postseason at the No.4 seed and face the No.1 seed (currently Kamehameha) during the semifinals next Tuesday.
Hilo will cap off its regular season with a non-division game at Pahoa High School on Friday afternoon. The Vikings lead the Division I standings, and will likely enter next week’s semifinals in the No.1 seed.
